Salix daphnoides, the Violet Willow is a deciduous, fast growing tree with purplish stems, usually coppiced to encourage colourful stems. Reaching a height of about 10m in 20 years this species is known for its distinctive purplish stems covered with a waxy bloom, and its narrow, lanceolate leaves. Salix daphnoides produces catkins in early spring, with male and female catkins appearing on separate plants. It is often found in moist, well-drained soils along rivers and streams.
