Quercus rubra, the Red Oak, is a majestic, deciduous tree native to North America. It is characterized by its broad, spreading crown and distinctive reddish-brown bark. Its large lobed leaves (twice the size of our native Oak) are matt green with blue-green undersides turning vibrant red in the autumn. Growing to a height of 20-30 metres, it will develop a broad but possibly irregular canopy. It is valued for its strong, durable wood and is commonly used in furniture making, flooring, and cabinetry. The tree also plays a significant role in forest ecosystems, providing habitat and food for various wildlife.
