Aesculus hippocastanum, the Horse Chestnut tree, is a large deciduous tree native to the Balkans in southeastern Europe. It typically grows to a height of 20–25 metres, though it can reach up to 35 metres under optimal conditions. The tree features a broad, domed crown with large, palmate leaves composed of five to seven leaflets. In spring, it produces striking, upright panicles of white flowers with a hint of pink or yellow. These are followed by spiny green capsules containing the shiny, brown seeds or conkers. The Horse Chestnut is often used as an ornamental tree in parks and gardens due to its impressive size and attractive flowers. It was first introduced to the UK from Turkey in the 16th century.
